SYDNEY, Indonesia Today - Whitehaven Coal Ltd, one of the major coal miners in Australia, outlines one week production lost following heavy rainfall on its New South Wales coal mines.

The Rocglen, Sunnyside, Tarrawonga and Werris Creek open cut mines are all currently closed as a result of localised heavy rainfall. All of them have volumes of water in the pits.

“No equipment has been damaged and mining will recommence at each of the mines as soon as weather conditions allow,” the company said on a press statement.

Access road to Rocglen and Tarrawonga mines as well as Gunnedah Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) are currently closed due to the event.

Other Whitehaven’s NSW mine, the Narrabi mine, is still continuing its operation but has been impacted by the inability of employees to travel to site.

“Appriximately one week’s production has been lost to date as a result of this wet weather. The full impact on Whitehaven’s operations will not be known until the wet weather has passed,” the company added.

With such condition, Whitehaven’s full operation is only come from the Canyon mine, New South Wales. However, according to Whitehaven’s website, last coal production from the mine was came in July 2009.

Following the report, Whitehaven’s stock has been traded as low as A$5.46 per share on Friday (3/2). The number represents 3.02% drop from its previous closing and slashed 25.4% from its 52 week peak. (bintang@theindonesiatoday.com)
