Theindonesiatoday.com – PT General Energy Bali (GEB) has kicked off the development of thermal power plant (PLTU) worth Rp7 trillion in Celukan Bawang, Gerokgak sub-district, Buleleng Regency, Bali, in collaboration with two large Chinese companies, China Huadian Engineering Corporation Ltd and Chian Huadian worth Rp 7 trillion.

The mega power plant project PLTU Celukan Bawang, which was delayed for two years, held groundbreaking ceremony on Monday. Lie Ling Wei, a senior executive of China Huadian Engineering and Wang Zihao of China Huadian Development and Regency head of Buleleng, Putu Bagiada also attended the ceremony on Monday, Antara reported.

The power plant will have a capacity of 3x142 MW or 426 Megawatt Hour (MW). The PLTU plant will use coal to fire electricity generator.

The power plant is developed to resolve electricity shortage in Indonesia, especially in Bali. The new power plant is three-fold greater than the existing power plant in Buleleng, i.e. PLTU Pemaron.

PLTU Celukan Bawang is one of concrete steps of the government, in this case PT PLN through PT GEB to help resolve power shortage in the tourist island of Bali. In the first phase, GEB will develop power plant with a capacity of 390 MW, which is enough to meet electricity demand of the island, said General Manager of PT GEB, H. Abdul Jalal.

Abdul Djalal expects there will be no blackouts in Bali again after PLTU Celukan Bawang starts operating. In addition, the power plant will assure that there will be no power disruptions at the international airport Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Buleleng Regency Head, Bagiada, said the local government fully backs up the mega-projects.

Lie Ling Wei of China Huadian said that his company is proud t be involved in development of the project because PLTU Celukan Bawang is the biggest power plant ever built by China Huadian outside China.

At present, Bali is supplied with 580 MW of electricty supply, consisting of 200 MW from Java, 130 MW from the Gilimanuk power generators, 120 MW from the Pesanggaran diesel power plant and 80 MW from the Pemaron gas-fired plant.
