President Director of PLN Dahlan Iskan has called on the upstream oil and gas regulatory body (BP Migas) to resume the operation of Sengkang gas refinery to allow gas-fired power plant PLTG Sengkang return to normalcy. The Sengkang gas refinery supplied gas to the Sengkang gas-fired power plant. In return, the plant sells its electricity to PLN. The operational halt has resulted in power crisis in south and west Sulawesi area over the past one week or so.
The gas-power plant halted operation after hundreds of local people demanded Rp1 billion in ‘community development funds’ at the Sengkang gas refinery. Security authorities said the situation has been under control, however, PLTG Sengkang still waits from the order from BP Migas before the gas-powered plant resume operations.
As a result of a halt of gas supply of 50 mmscfd to the plant, PLTG Sengkang gas supply reduced dramatically to 125 MW, leading to power blackouts in a number of areas in the region.
The Sengkang gas-fired power plant is owned by Energy World Corporation (EWC), Australia. Sengkang is the largest electricity supply in South Sulawesi. Some industries, such as PT Semen Bosowa, has also halted operations due to power cuts.
