Thermal coal spot prices in Newcastle Port, Australia, declined 1.3% to US$95.05 per ton for the week ended July 23.
According to prices tracked by GlobalCoal, NEWC Index settled lower at US$95.05 from US$96.34 in the previous week, while thermal coal spot prices in Richard Bay port, South Africa inched up 0.3% to US$90.52 per ton. ARA Index (Europe), meanwhile, declined slightly by 0.3% to US$92.47 per ton.
Still, NEWC Index gained 12.2% year-to-date from about US$84 per ton in the first week of January 2010. On average, coal prices tracked by these three indexes gained 11.1% year-to-date.
Crude oil, meanwhile, settled lower at US$78.98 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) on Friday, July 23.
Coal-related stocks ended mainly in higher grounds on Friday, led by Whitehaven (+6.32%), Straits Asia (+3.59%), and China Shenhua (+3.36%). China Coal, BHP, Rio Tinto, and Xstrata also closed substantially higher on Friday. In JAKARTA, Adaro gained 1.23%, while Indika and Indo Tambangraya increased 1.53% and 0.52% respectively. Bumi Resources closed flat at Rp1740.
