Theindonesiatoday.com - Each member of Regional Representative Council in Jember Regency, East Java province, gets new iPad purchased with funds from local administration budget in 2011.
"It has been discussed and approved in the plenary session," argued H Syahroni, member of the Council from Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), as quoted by Koran Tempo today.
Budget allocated for one iPad is Rp10 million. Total cost for the iPad amounted to Rp500 million. These Jember legislators defended the purchase saying iPad will improve their performance.
Civil society and anti-corruption movement in Jember condemned local legislators for the iPad purchase. "This is a waste of money, really hurting people," said Kustiono, head of the Community for Anti-Corruption.
This is not the first time Jember house of representatives (DPRD) criticized for electronic equipment purchase. Back in 2004-2009, Jember DPRD members got laptops worth Rp15 million per unit. (Theindonesiatoday.com)
