Govt Denied a Failed Military Operation Against Somali Pirates

Theindonesiatoday.com - Indonesia has reportedly sent military troops and ships to release MV Sinar Kudus and 20 Indonesian crews held hostage by Somalian pirates since March 16. But when the troops arrived, Sinar Kudus had moved to other area.

Despite the situation, coordinating minister for politic and security Djoko Suyanto denied it was a failed military operation.

"Don't say that, because the military operation has never been launched," Djoko is quoted by Detik.com Friday (Apr 15) night.

Djoko said military operations to release Sinar Kudus would be too dangerous for the crews onboard. Government, he said, has option to release the hostages through negotiations with the pirates.

Foreign affairs minister Marty Natalegawa said he will soon meet foreign affairs minister of Somalia to resolve the crisis.

MIlitary commander Agus Suhartono told the press that Army's special forces and marine (401 men in total) have been deployed since April 1st. Military operation was aborted, however, after pirates directed the vessel to shoreline, military opted to proceed with negotiation instead. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
