S&P Raises Credit Ratings on Indonesia to BB+

Theindonesiatoday.com - Indonesian military commander Agus Suhartono interpreted differently the involvement of Vice Marshall Rio Mendung Thalieb as president commissioner of PT Sarwahita, where former Citibank manager Inong Malinda Dee---being alleged of embezzling US$2 million from her clients, was also a commissioner.

Agus said military officers are allowed to do business one year before their retirement age pursuant to Article 55 paragraph c of Law No 34/2004 about Indonesian Military. His statement contradicts earlier statement made by defense minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro saying military officers are not allowed to do business pursuant to Article 39 Paragraph 3 of the same law.

"Of course if we use Article 39, it is not allowed to do business, lex generalis. But Article 55 allows them one year before mandatory retirement age to do business, lex specialist," Agus argued as quoted by Detiknews.com yesterday.

Purnomo, meanwhile, insisted military officers are not allowed to do business. Rio Mendung Thalied, an air force vice marshall, is now vice governor of National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas).

Police has recently uncovered transfers of Rp2 billion from Malinda Dee's accounts to PT Sarwahita where Rio Mendung is president commissioner. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
