PPP Leaders Endorse Yusuf Kalla for 2014 Presidential Race

MAKASSAR, Indonesia Today – Majority leaders of the Development United Party (PPP) have given their supports to former Vice President Jusuf Kalla to be president candidate in 2014 election.

According to Amir Uskara, PPP chairman of South Sulawesi chapter, leaders of around twenty-three chapters have officially expressed their supports for Kalla to be a president candidate. The party has also decided to invite Kalla to attend the party's National Meeting today (Feb 22) at Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, Kediri, East Java.

“Initially there’s no agenda to invite  Pak JK (Kalla). But, after majority of the party’s chapter leaders gave their supports, then Kalla will attend the National Meeting,” said Amir last night.

M Arwani Thomaf (member of PPP executive board) and Husain Abdullah (head of Kalla’s Media team) have also confirmed about supports for Kalla.

According to Arwani, Kalla’s role in resolution of Ambon, Poso, and Aceh conflicts led to PPP leaders' support to nominating him as president candidate.

Kalla himself hasn’t given a firm statement about 2014 race. Kalla, who is former chairman of Golkar Party, currently serves as chairman of Indonesian Red Cross (PMI). He is also known as ambassador for Komodo Island in the controversial New Seven Wonders contest.

Kalla's bid for presidency in 2009 election ended up in a distant third behind winner SBY and runner-up Megawati. He entered the race with General (ret) Wiranto as vice president candidate.

PPP itself is currently the sixth largest political party in the House of Representatives (DPR) with 6.78% seats (38 lawmakers). PPP is also the fifth largest political party in the ruling coalition of SBY-Boediono’s administration. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
