Demokrat Moves Angelina Sondakh Law Commission

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today – President SBY's Demokrat Party surprised many with its decision to move graft suspect and lawmaker Angelina Sondakh to House Commission III, which oversees law and human rights affairs.

The Commission also supervises National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), which just named Angelina a suspect in the high-profile athlete dormitory graft case, which dragged former Demokrat treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin.

Angelina was previously Demokrat lawmaker at the House Commission X (overseeing education, culture, youth, sports, etc).

Jafar Hafsah, head of Demokrat Party faction in the House, revealed that Angie has also been pulled out from the House's Budget Committee (Banggar).

Another interesting name in this rotation is Muhammad Nasir, brother of Nazaruddin. According to Jafar, Nasir has been moved from the House Commission III to the House Commission XI (overseeing finance and banking). Jafar said Nasir has also been dismissed from the Budget Committee.

Executive director of the Indonesian Parliament Watchdog (Formappi) Sebastian Salang, meanwhile, sees this rotation as part of Demokrat’s attempts to protecting Angelina. “I am suspicious that Demokrat has a hidden agenda,” Sebastian said.

Angelina is scheduled to give her testimony in the trial of Nazaruddin today. KPK has earlier charged Angie with Article 5 paragraph 2 or Article 11 or Article 12a of the Corruption Law No 31/1999 as amended by Law No 30/2001.

Nazaruddin has repeatedly mentioned Angelina's role in the high-profile case. While Yulianis, former vice director of Permai Group, a company controlled by Nazaruddin, testified before the court on January 25 that Permai Group had given Rp5 billion of fees to Angelina and also I Wayan Koster (PDI-P lawmaker). Yulianis said assertively that she is pretty sure about that because she has kept a record for every expenses of Permai Group. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
