TB Silalahi, Replaces Ami Syamsuddin at Demokrat

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, in his capacity as chief patron of Demokrat Party, has appointed Lt General (ret) TB Silalahi as the party's ethic council secretary to replace Amir Syamsuddin (minister of law and human rights).

Koran Tempo quoted Amir saying he resigned from the council because Demokrat needs a full time secretary. He dismissed speculations about political motive behind the replacement, including his decision to sign a letter to recommend the discharging of lawmaker Angelina Sondakh, who has been named graft suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

According to Tempo, three other members of the council---SBY, Jero Wacik, and EE Mangindaan (minister of transportation)---have also signed the recommendation to suspend Angelina. The only member yet to sign is party chairman Anas Urbaningrum.

The paper quoted another party leader Jero Wacik, who is energy and mineral resources minister, saying SBY made the decision to replace Amir with Silalahi in a meeting two days AGO.

TB Silalahi was cabinet member during Soeharto regime, known for his relationship with Arta Graha Group controlled by Tommy Winata. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
