Hatta Ali, Elected New Chief Justice

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today – Hatta Ali has been elected as new chief of the Supreme Court (MA) in the election held on Wednesday (February 8). Hatta will then replacing Harifin A Tumpa.

Hatta has successfully defeated eight other candidates in the election where he has secured a majority votes (28 from 54 supreme judges total votes). Ahmad Kamil has only got 15 votes, Abdul Kadir Mappong (5 votes), M Saleh (3votes), Paulus Effendi Lotulung  (1 vote), and 3 invalid votes.

Hatta, born in South Sulawesi, before elected as MA new chief, serves as deputy chief for supervisory at the Supreme Court. This position has a power to give sanction to problematic judges. Hatta also served as MA spokesperson and has recently been elected chairman of the Indonesia Judges Association (IKAHI).

Rumor about bribery attempt from certain candidates has been swirling around. The rumor has triggered tens of advocates from the Indonesian Advocates Congress (KAI) to stage a rally in front of the Court building on January 30, 2011.

Djoko Sarwoko, a deputy Supreme Judge for Specific Crime, admitted earlier about the rumor. He revealed that the rumor about one vote of supreme judge was priced Rp5 billion was circulating. Achmad Basarah, lawmaker at the House of Representatives (DPR), has urged the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to monitor the election of MA new chief.  “To anticipate MA new chief being elected with money politics, KPK must monitoring the election. If necessary, wire tape communication lines of all the Supreme Judges,” Achmad said. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
