Anas Urbaningrum, Resign

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today – Pressures on Anas Urbaningrum, chairman of President SBY’s Demokrat Party intensify as more colleagues suggest Anas to resign.

Ruhut Sitompul, known as supporter of Anas, said allegations toward Anas’ involvement in some cases will eventually destroying the party. “I want him as a statesman to resign, so he could be focused on the case,” said Ruhut, who is also lawmaker at the House Commission III, Thursday (Feb 2).

Hayono Isman, member of Demokrat Party supervisory council, said Ruhut's request needs to be considered, including by Anas himself.

Max Sopacua, deputy chairman of Demokrat Party, considers Ruhut’s request as a sense of belonging to the party. Max, however, reminded that his party leaves to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to make a legal decision on Anas. Max himself is actually still haunted by a graft case. KPK had on September 6th, 2011 examined Max as witness in a graft case relating to the procurement of medical devices and equipments at the ministry of health in 2007. Max was examined in his capacity as former member of the House Commission IX (oversees healthcare etc) when the program was launched.

Other politician from Demokrat Party, Jero Wacik, who is also energy and mineral resources minister, meanwhile, believes that the political storm hitting the party will end soon. Jero believes that as long as SBY is still holding a role as Demokrat Party’s patron leader, the party would still be solid.

Rumors were swirling around the dismissal of Anas Urbaningrum as Demokrat Party chairman. Anas is currently a main target of the accusations from the graft suspect and former Demokrat Party treasurer, Muhammad Nazaruddin. Nazaruddin revealed about Anas ‘ involvement in the high-profile bribery case of athlete dormitory. The allegation of Anas involvement in the case has been also mentioned formally before court hearing by two witnesses. They are Mindo Rosalina Manulang (marketing director of PT Anak Negeri) and Yulianis (vice finance director of Permai Group), both are companies controlled by Nazaruddin.

Some names have been tipped to replace Anas. They are Djoko Suyanto (coordinating minister of politics, law, and security affairs), EE Mangindaan (a retired general, who currently serves as Transportation minister), Melani Leimena Suharli (member of Demokrat Party supervisory council, who currently serves as deputy speaker of People’s Consultative Council/MPR), Marzuki Alie (deputy chairman of Demokrat Party supervisory council, who currently serves as the House Speaker), Andi Mallarangeng (youth and sports affairs minister), and even Soekarwo (Demokrat Party chairman of East Java chapter, who currently serves as East Java governor).
