Djoko Suyanto, Might Replace Anas Urbaningrum, Media Reports

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today - Rumors were swirling around the dismissal of Anas Urbaningrum as chairman of President SBY's Demokrat Party. National media speculated on Djoko Suyanto, coordinating minister of politics, law, and security affairs, as potential successor.

Some national newspapers speculated today that the decision to replace Anas with Djoko has been taken in a meeting of the powerful supervisory council of Demokrat Party at SBY’s private residence in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java last night (Jan 24).

Max Sopacua, deputy chairman of Demokrat Party has on Wednesday (January 25) denied that the meeting discussed about the plan to dismiss Anas. Max, however, said that the final decision is in SBY’s hands as chairman of Demokrat Party's supervisory council. “The decision is in the hands of supervisory council chairman (President SBY),” told Max.

Sutan Bathoegana, another Demokrat executive leader, also denied the rumors related to both Anas and Djoko. "That’s not true," Sutan said.

Rakyat Merdeka Online, meanwhile, quoted anonymous source saying the decision to replace Anas with Djoko is based on demand from First Lady Ani Yudhoyono. Besides that, according to the report, Djoko has been chosen to lead Demokrat Party in order to to counterbalance and anticipate maneuvers from PAN chairman Hatta Rajasa, who is also coordinating minister for economy, ahead of the next presidential election in 2014. Both Djoko and Hatta have repeatedly been mentioned as president candidate in 2014.

Two other names mentioned to replacing Anas are EE Mangindaan (a retired general, who currently serves as Transportation minister) and Melani Leimena Suharli (member of Demokrat Party supervisory council, who currently serves as deputy speaker of People’s Consultative Council/MPR).

Ahmad Mubarok, member of the supervisory council had earlier revealed about political rivalry in the party, including pressures to dismiss Anas. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
