Theindonesiatoday.com - Puan Maharani, daughter of former President Megawati Soekarnoputri, has on Friday (January 20) replaced Tjahjo Kumolo as head of PDI-P faction in the House of Representatives (DPR).

“That's true...PDI-P Executive Board has ordered Puan as faction head. I must focus in my duties as PDI-P secretary general and member of the House Commission I,” Tjahjo confirmed this afternoon.

Taufik Kiemas, Puan’s father, who currently serves as Speaker of People’s Consultative Council (MPR), has also confirmed this replacement.

Puan was born in JAKARTA, September 6, 1973. Puan currently serves as a lawmaker at the House Commission VI (overseeing state-owned enterprises, trade, etc).

Puan has been promoted by several national figures, including her father Taufik, to enter the presidential race in 2014, but mostly as vice president candidate. According to those figures, Puan will continue the dynasty of Soekarno, founding father and first President of Indonesia. Others, however, doubt Puan’s capacity to be a leader of the country.

Gerindra and Golkar Party are among political parties, which have expressed their interest to pairing Puan with their respective president candidate. It is considered reasonable because PDI-P still has sizable support from in the grass root level.

Puan was graduated from faculty of social and political sciences at University of Indonesia with bachelor degree in communication studies. Puan reportedly started active in political organization since 2006 when she joined the Indonesian Youth National Committee (KNPI). Puan later became one of young PDI-P politicians where she serves as head of political department of the party. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
