Aceh Elections

Theindonesiatoday.com - Aceh Party's chance to participate in the Aceh Regional Election is effectively closed after the General Election Commission (KPU) decided to rule out the party from the election.

With the decision, the demand of Aceh regional parliaments to include the largest regional party in Aceh was rejected.

Agustiani Tio Fridelina, member of Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu), stated that the institution does not have any legal ground to give time extension to the party.

Agustiani stated that the possibility for the party to participate in the election is closed, unless the government decides to issue a regulation to allow the party's participation. “Unless the government issues a regulation such as the Constitutional Court ruling or government regulation,” he said as quoted by Media Indonesia.

Related to the decision, Minister of Internal Affairs Gamawan Fauzi demands everyone to not make any speculation to avoid increasing tension and security risks. The regional election is scheduled to take place on February 16th, 2012.

Aceh Party, via its spokesperson Fachrul Razi, stated earlier that the regional election in Aceh is legally defective as long as the election still use Qanun No 7/2006 as the legal ground, and stated that the party would not participate in the election as long as the Qanun is used on the election.

Teuku Kemal Fasya, Aceh Antropologhist said earlier that option to delay the elections is better than executing the elections amidst escalation of violence in the region. “There’s a factor which disappeared in the process of peaceful elections. First there should be a guarantee of peace, then we can think about the elections,” said Kemal.

Kemal's statement refers to current situation in Aceh, where several terror of gunshots occured in the past few months. Kemal said that series of terrors can't be seen as normal cases nor ordinary crimes. “From all facts gathered, we can conclude that it’s unusual,” said Kemal. (indra@theindonesiatoday.com)
