Barack Obama, Raises Papua Issue

Theindonesiatoday.com - US President Barack Obama has raised Papua issue in a bilateral meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Nusa Dua, Bali Friday (Nov 18).

Teuku Faizasyah, president's spokesperson for foreign affairs, said to Detik.com that in the meeting, president SBY reaffirmed government's position on Papua, including plan for welfare approach and commitment for human rights. Unfortunately, Teuku provided no further detail about what Obama actually said.

Separately, The National Committee of West Papua (KNPB) has sent its message to Asia Pacific leaders gathered in the ASEAN Summit in Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) and asked them not to use Papua issue as a barter tool for any political and economics interests.

“We do not want, our nation and our region, Papua, become a victim of political interests of the capitalist and colonialists countries,” said Mako Tabuni, KNPB deputy chairman as quoted by Bintang papua.com Thursday night (Nov 17).

Mako also asks Ban Ki Moon, secretary general of United Nations, to materialize his earlier statement that Papua has the rights to determine their own fate. Mako therefore demands those political rights can be granted to the Papuan.

Other political group in Papua, Federation Republic of West Papua (RFPB), meanwhile, via its spokespersons, Jack Wanggai and Heppi Daimboa, ask the government of Indonesia to acknowledge the transition government of RFPB as a government of an independent state with full sovereignty.

According to Jack and Heppi in their press conference Thursday, RFPB has fulfilled the five requirements as a legitimate state i.e it has a region, 2.6 million citizens, natural resources, a state has been declared on October 19, 2011, and also an international recognition.

Jack and Heppi, representing President and Prime Minister of RFPB, ask for a government to government talk between RFPB transition government and Indonesian government. Jack and Heppi, however, reminded to all Papuan not offended by various provocations ahead of commemoration of the Independence Day of West Papua on December 1.

The transition government of RFPB has been declared in the Papuan Congress III held on October 19-21 in Abepura. Forkurus Yobeisembut has been elected as President of RFPB while Edison Waromi has elected as Prime Minister. The congress has been dissolved by security forces reportedly consisted of police and military officers on October 19. There were six Papuan killed, while the other 200 participants have been arrested. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
