Max considers money politics in the election of political party chairman is normal practice when asked about allegations surrounding flow of money from former Demokrat Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin to the party's congress in Bandung, West Java in 2010, which elected Anas Urbaningrum as chairman.
“If there’s something called as appreciation money, effort money (for someone), because someone wanted to be elected and get a vote, it’s normal. Anywhere, in any party congress, in any national meeting, things like that happened, which is now called as money politics,” Max said.
According to Max, money politics is fine as long as the source of funds is from private money, not from State money.
Max admitted that the practices also happened at his party, including accommodations such as ticket, hotel, food, blackberry, jacket, etc. He, however, believed that the money used for these expenses came from private parties.
