JAYAPURA, Indonesia Today - Elvis Tabuni and Simon Alom, two regent candidates of Puncak regency, Papua, have been named suspects related to series of clash between their supporters, which killed 55 people since mid of 2011.

Deputy chief of Papua Police Paulus Waterpauw revealed that both Elvis and Simon have been arrested since last Friday (February 18) at the Papua Police headquarter. According to Paulus, Papua Police actually has tried to perform a legal procedures to arrest the two candidates since January 30, 2012.

Paulus explained that Simon has initially been arrested in Jayapura. That time, however, Papua Police still needed a permission letter from Internal Affairs Minister to arrest Elvis Tabuni, who currently serves as House Speaker of Puncak Regional Representatives (DPRD).

Elvis, according to Paulus, was in JAKARTA that time. Later, after Papua Police received a permission letter from Internal Affairs Minister to arrest Elvis on February 6, Papua Police then sent its investigators to take Elvis home. “After that, both of them were detained at Papua Police on Friday (Feb 18),” Paulus said.

Paulus said that both Elvis and Simon will remain be detained while pending peace making effort from House Speaker of Papua Regional Representatives (DPR Papua) John Ibo and chairman of Papuan People Council (MRP) Timotius Murib.

Paulus also revealed that Papua Police has deployed an additional police officers to Puncak regency to anticipate further clash between supporters.

The clash between Elvis and Simon’s supporters has killed 55 people since mid of 2011, including two people shot to death on February 4, 2012.

Elvis, with his pair Heri Dosinaen, enters the race with supports of a coalition of six political parties (PIB, Gerindra, PNBKI, PPPI, PNI, and PPD). While Simon, with his pair Yosia Tenbak, is supported by a coalition of four political parties (PBR,  Gerindra, PKPI, and PDP).

Dualism of support from Gerindra Party, led by Prabowo Subianto, is reportedly one of triggering factors of the clash.

Four other pair candidates of Puncak regent and vice regent are Wilem Wandik-Repinus Telenggen, supported by a coalition of eleven political parties (PDIP, Demokrat, PKB, Pelopor Party, PPD, PBN, PPDI, PKS, PKID, Hanura, and PDS), Ruben Wakerkwa-Septinus Pahabol, supported by a coalition of five political parties (Pelopor Party, PNBKI, PPD, PKP, and PAN), Petrus Tabuni-Jansen F Tinal pair, supported by a coalition of three political parties (Golkar, PPI and PMB ), and Yopi Murib-Yoel Yolemal pair, who enters the race as independent pair.
