Atururi conveyed his suggestion in a meeting with the House supervisory team of special autonomy for Papua and Aceh on Thursday (February 16) at the parliament building, Jakarta. “So, there are three governors, three vice governors,“ said Atururi.
Atururi believed that bloody conflicts in Papua would continue without expansion of administrative powers. With the divisions of Papua into three provinces, the regional administration will be more effective and focus to resolve the problem.
Internal Affairs Minister, Gamawan Fauzi, in his respond to Atururi’s suggestion, said he basically agreed with the suggestion. “If (people) wanted to have three provinces in Papua, I think it’s OK,” Gamawan said.
At the moment, Indonesian portion of Papua Island has two provinces: Papua and West Papua. Proposal to establish new province in Papua has been floated several times, but implementation is delayed for various reasons. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
