"It is true that we use former US mariners as security consultant. Their main roles are in security of logistics, and convoy from the lowlands to highlands," said Rozik B Soetjipto, the newly appointed CEO of PT Freeport Indonesia, to lawmakers in the Supervisory Team for Special Autonomy of Papua and Aceh at the House of Representatives (DPR) Thursday.
Head of the Supervisory Team, Priyo Budi Santoso, who is also deputy House Speaker, responded with cynical question. "Isn't there Papuan or Indonesian, former military/police officer to do the job?" Priyo, a Golkar politician, asked.
Roziq had no chance to answer because another Golkar lawmaker, Yoris Rameway, bombarded Freeport management with other questions.
"Why you have to use Americans? You don't trust Indonesians? Stop that, and follow the rules here," said Yoris, known as one of Papuan leaders.
Freeport management is given a special session with DPR to answer these questions. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
