Aceh Party Claims to Win Election in One Round

BANDA Aceh, Indonesia Today - Aceh Party, the biggest local party in Aceh province, was optimistic that its pair candidates of governor and vice governor, Zaini Abdullah and Muzakkir Manaf, will win the election in one round only.

The target to win the election in one round has been declared in a close meeting of Aceh Party at the private residence of Wali Nanggroe in Banda Aceh yesterday. The meeting was reportedly attended by hundreds of ex-combatants of Free Aceh Movement (GAM).

“All of us agree to reach the target of 80% votes. There are eighteen political parties joining us,” said Kamaruddin A Bakar, head of Zaini-Muzakkir campaign team today (Jan 30).

Fachrul Razi, spokesperson of Aceh Party, added that most of GAM ex-combatants have returned to support his party. “There are only 2% of KPA (Aceh Transitional Committee) members who support other candidates,” Fachrul claimed.

KPA represents the interests of GAM ex-combatants, which have a strong network in grass root level to support Aceh Party. Muzakkir, a former GAM military commander, is currently the chairman of the party.

Fachrul Razi also asked the Aceh Election Committee (KIP Aceh) to be consistent with its decision to hold the election on April 9, 2012 as requested to and approved by the Constitutional Court (MK).

According to Fachrul, if the election will be held before that day, he’s worried that will triggered a new conflict. “We hope KIP Aceh will be consistent to hold the election on April 9, 2012,” ask Fachrul.

KIP Aceh has on January 24, 2012 has filed its request to MK to reschedule the Aceh elections from February 16 to April 9, 2012. MK, later, has on January 27 finally endorsed a new schedule of the elections as requested by KIP Aceh. The new schedule is no later than April 9, 2012.

The MK’s ruling actually makes Aceh elections rescheduled for the third time already. Aceh elections, to elect governor, regents, and mayors, were initially scheduled for November 14, 2011, then pushed back to December 24, 2011 only to be rescheduled again to February 16, 2012.

KIP Aceh yesterday has decided to disqualified two pair candidates for governor and vice governor of Aceh. They are Fakhrulsyah Mega-Zulfinar and Hendra Fadli - Yuli Zuardi Rais who were registered themselves as independent pairs.

Other pair candidates in the race are the incumbent pair Irwandi Yusuf and Muhyan Yunan, Muhammad Nazar-Nova Iriansyah pair, Darni M Daud-Ahmad Fauzi pair, and Ahmad Tajuddin-Teuku Suriansyah pair. Muhammad Nazar and Nova Iriansyah pair is the only current pair candidate who has secured support from coalition of three political parties (Demokrat, PPP, and SIRA Party). Three other pairs, Irwandi-Muhyan, Darni-Ahmad, and Tajuddin-Suriansyah enter the race as independent pair candidates. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
