BEKASI, Indonesia Today - Tens of thousands workers from Bekasi, West Java staged a major rally on Friday (January 27) paralyzing industrial estates in the area and traffic in the greater Jakarta area. They managed to push business owners and government to raise salary in a meeting Friday night.
Coordinating minister for the economy Hatta Rajasa told the press Friday night that workers union (SPSI, FSPMI, GSPMII, and FSBDSI) and business association Apindo agreed a new minimum wage for workers in Bekasi, West Java as follows: Rp1.849 million or about US$205 per month for workers in group I, Rp1.715 million for Group II, and Rp1.491 million for Group III.
This is slightly lower (0.05%) than minimum wages set by West Java Governor disputed by Apindo.
The coordination emergency meeting was held upon the instruction of President SBY to Hatta and coordinating minister of politics, security, and human rights affairs Djoko Suyanto to immediately find solution to end the workers' strike.
Thousands of factories were closed down Friday as workers blocked access roads to industrial estates in Bekasi and surrounding areas. About 2,600 police officers were deployed to guard the rally which fortunately ended without chaos.
The workers were angry on the ruling issued by the Bandung State Administrative Court (PTUN) on Thursday (Jan 26) that granting the lawsuit from the Bekasi chapter of the Employers Association (Apindo) which aimed to revoke the 2012 minimum wage (UMK) set by West Java governor.
Jakarta Police head, Ins.Gen. Untung S Radjab, who came to the location demanded workers to open the blockades. Workers, however, ignored the call. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
