Tsunami Kills 108 in Mentawai Island West Sumatera, 502 People Still Missing

Theindonesiatoday.com -- A massive 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck West Sumatera on Monday night has in fact caused tsunami in Mentawai Island. At least 108 people have been killed, while 502 people were still reportedly missing.

“That’s the data as of 2.30 p.m. The number of victims could rise,” Rachmadi, a volunteer with Citra Mandiri Mentawai Foundation was quoted by detik.ocm as saying on Tuesday.

Rachmadi said most of the victims are those live in South Pagai Island. At least 23 people died in this land, while the remaining victims are those living in South Sipora sub-district.

Rachmadi said the search by members of the Search and Rescue Team (SAR) are still continuing.

Harmensyah, head of natural disaster mitigation agency for West SUmatra, told Detik.com that at least 108 people have been killed, while 502 people were still missing.

Hundreds of people are currently living in refugee areas as they are worried about followed-up tsunami.

West Sumatera Governor Irwan Priyanto told Metro TV said that his staff has tried to visit the tsunami affected area, but some have to return due to bad weather. “Bad weather and high wave make it difficult to reach the affected area,” Irwan said.

He said the communication to the Mentawai island and smaller islands was cut off and communication only resumed to normal this morning. Priyatno said based on the government data, 17 have been killed, hundreds remained missing.
