Theindonesiatoday.com - The Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) declared the purchase of 7% shares in PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) by Government Investment Center (PIP) invalid. The purchase is deemed a violation of Indonesian Constitution.
Harry Azhar Azis, deputy chairman of the House Commission XI, overseeing finance and banking affairs, BPK revealed the conclusion to leaders of Commission XI in a meeting Thursday (Sep 29).
"The purchase should be done with approval from the House of Representatives (DPR)," said Harry, quoting BPK's audit report.
Attending the meeting were BPK chief Hadi Poernomo and deputy chief Hasan Bisri. BPK promised the Commission to submit the audit report in two weeks.
Hasan Bisri admitted the meeting to Koran Tempo, saying BPK uses Law No 17/2003 about the State Finance and Law No 1/2004 about the State Treasury.
PIP head Soritaon Siregar, meanwhile, believes government's decision to purchase Newmont shares is legal. "We believe there is no legal aspect violated," Siregar said. (indra@theindonesiatoday.com)
