One Company to Resume Film Import

Theindonesiatoday.com - One company initially suspended from importing films, including from Hollywood, will soon resume its activities following the payment of Rp9 billion financial obligations to the State.

"One of the companies has paid Rp9 billion. They have resumed import, but has to follow the rules," said Agung Kuswandono, director general of customs and excise at ministry of finance, as quoted by Detik.com today.

According to Agung, the Rp9 billion payment was exclusive of penalties for late payments of royalties.

Agung dismissed allegations that the institution has protected the cartel in imported films. Famous actor and director Deddy Mizwar raised the cartel issue in a meeting with minister of finance Agus Martowardojo. Deddy basically raised question on why Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA) is only willing to distribute films through three importers, who turned out to have problems with their obligations to the State.

Director general of customs and excise stated there are nine film importers. However, only three importers were active in import activities. A review by Director general of customs and excise in 2010 found three film importers have yet to pay royalties-related tax obligations. Total overdue payments of these three importers reached Rp31 billion, exclusive of fines.

The amount, according to Director general of customs and excise, is way too small compared to the payments made by importers to film producers of Rp314 billion for 52 films. Government insists that film importers shall pay royalty in arrears plus fines. But then the government makes it easy to give a time limit installment, for 2 years.
