Energy Ministry: MTU Coal Stopped Production since August 2011

Theindonesiatoday.com - PT Multi Tambangjaya Utama (MTU) has stopped its production since August 2011 pending on Supreme Court ruling, Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources confirmed.

“We have stopped the company’s operational. Ministry of Forestry has asked in February 2011 to stop MTU’s production due to environmental issues,” Muhammad Taswin, Head of Sub-Directorate of Commercial Affairs in the ministry told Rakyat Merdeka recently.

He also denied allegations from local NGO Masyarakat Anti Korupsi Indonesia (MAKI) that the company is still doing activities in the area as the company awaits recommendations.

MAKI alleged the company has bribed local judge up to Rp300 million to be released from charges. MAKI has filed a lawsuit against MTU to Bunto District Court following the production and sales activity even though its operation has been put on hold by Ministry of Energy.

Court, however, released the company from charges. Interestingly, a secret e-mail message from MTU’s Community Development Manager addressed to two MTU officials, Supasses Wisarnsingh and Watana Pundet, was leaked to MAKI, saying the company has bribed Rp300 million to the judge.

Following the report, MAKI filed cassation to Supreme Court against both MTU and the Court, stating both parties have violated the laws.

“We urge the Supreme Court to issue verdict on the case as soon as possible. We have seen indication of mafia in defeating Ministry of Forestry and Indonesian Police,” Bonyamin Saiman, Executive Director of MAKI, said.

As a reply, MTU’s Technical Director Bagus Jaya Wardhana, stated the company did not commence any production activity. Bagus, however, declined to comment the legal proceedings.

Founded in 1989, PT Multi Tambangjaya Utama operates as a subsidiary of Saraburi Coal Co, Ltd. MTU was initially owned by Econ International Ltd (80%) and PT Rimba Kencana (20%). (bintang@theindonesiatoday.com)
