Theindonesiatoday.com - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has replied a letter of embattled Demokrat politician and a corruption suspect Muhammad Nazaruddin Sunday (August 21). The letter has been sent to Nazaruddin, who is detained at Police Mobile Brigade in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java.
SBY basically stated in the letter that he will not intervene the legal process and asked Nazaruddin to be cooperative in the process. "I believe KPK will be working professionally, independent, and fair. Reveal all informations to KPK, including those implicated from any political party," SBY said.
Regarding Nazaruddin's appeal for protection of family member, SBY said it is the sole responsibility of law enforcement officers to ensure such protection. "But that's not means protection or immunity from legal process," SBY said.
As reported earlier, Nazaruddin wrote a letter to President SBY asking for 'protection' of his wife from legal proceedings, and in exchange, Nazaruddin pledged that he won't reveal anything that could ruin the image of SBY and Demokrat Party.
Nazaruddin's wife, Neneng Sri Wahyuni, has been named suspect in a corruption case being investigated by KPK.
KPK has examined Nazaruddin on Thursday (August 18), but reportedly played 'amnesia' when asked by investigators about allegations he mounted during overseas hideouts. KPK said, however, that the anti-graft body could still prosecute Nazaruddin and other people implicated in the case, including people close to SBY. (haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
