Newmont Nusa Tenggara, Dispute over Newmont Shares Purchase Continues

Theindonesiatoday.com - The House Commission XI (oversees financial affairs) will summon minister of finance Agus Martowardojo to drop government's purchase of 7% shares in PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara.

Harry Azhar Azis, deputy chairman of the commission, said finance minister will be called back in relation to the opinion of Supreme Audit Agency (BPK). The agency, according to Harry, concluded the purchase made by Pusat Investasi Pemerintah (PIP), government investment center, uses funds from the State budget.

"BPK opinion based on its audit pointed to a violation of the purchase. That's why we're scheduling an immediate call on minister of finance," Harry, a politician from Golkar Party, told the press Sunday (Oct 23).

The lawmaker cited BPK audit stating for investments using State Budget, there shall be a government regulation.

"It's like equity participation for state-owned enterprises, need specific regulation. For this investment, government shall propose for an approval from lawmakers," Harry argued.

Based on the audit report, according to Harry, minister of finance shall drop the purchase. "Unless the minister is willing to submit a new proposal to DPR," Harry said.

Ahmad Badaruddin, acting secretary general of Ministry of Finance, said earlier that The House approval is not necessary in the purchase. “Ministry of Finance remains of the opinion that the The House approval is not necessary, because it is not the State's Equity Injection (PMN),  but rather an investment decision,” he said.

“Auditor and auditee (the audited institution) may have a different opinion," Ahmad said about BPK opinion on the purchase. (indra@theindonesiatoday.com)
