Qantas Raises International Fuel Surcharges

Theindonesiatoday.com - Qantas plans to raise international fuel surcharges between 35% and 52% in response to rising oil and jet fuel prices effective February 19, 2011.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said oil and fuel prices had increased sharply in recent months. "Year to date average prices for both West Texas Intermediate crude oil and SINGAPORE jet fuel are at their highest since FY08, and second half FY11 prices are forecast to be around 20 percent higher than in the first half," Joyce said.

"Many airlines have already responded to this significant increase in their operating costs and adjusted their fuel surcharges and fares in recent weeks and months," Qantas said.

The new fuel surcharges will increase from AS$95 to AS$145 for UK and Europe routes (one way ex-Australia), from A$85 to A$115 for mainland USA, Canada, South America, South Africa, and India, and from A$55 to A$75 for Asia Pacific, Honolulu routes.

Qantas said international surcharges had been reduced on four occasions since October 2006, and from as much as A$210 one-way between January and October 2008, when oil prices were at similar levels to today.

The price of Singapore jet fuel has increased from an average of US$88 per barrel in September 2010 to US$110 last month, and about US$117 per barrel today. (Theindonesiatoday.com)
