Human Resources Manager Mohammad Sofyan told Kompas.com that the work is planned to commence in 2013, which will cost up to Rp30 billion.
Sofyan said the fund will come from internal cash, but Pelindo will open for parties who are interested to invest. He said there are up to 10 ships docked at the port per month, comprising two container ships, six cargo ships, and two passengers ships.
Sofyan also admitted Regent of Merauke once offered his side to open new port in the area to support the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE) program, but no concrete follow up yet.
The Merauke Port is one of the easternmost ports in Indonesia, having up to 158 meters long and 15 meters width. The port is able to serve 3,000 gross tons of container ship with 100 meters long. (bintang@theindonesiatoday.com)
