Sriwijaya Air Purchases 20 Embraer-190 Jets

Theindonesiatoday.com - Sriwijaya Air has signed an agreement with Embraer to purchase 20 EMBRAER-190 jets, with purchase rights for ten more aircraft.

The order, which was made at the 49th Paris Air Show, has total value of US$856 million, based on January 2011 economic conditions, and could reach USD1.28 billion, if all purchase rights are exercised.

Sriwijaya Air’s E190s will be outfitted with 100 seats in a single-class configuration. The airline identified a need for a dedicated fleet of 100-seat aircraft to replace some of its narrow-bodies and to achieve its expansion objectives, adding new frequencies in existing domestic markets, as well as pioneering new nonstop services throughout the region.

Sriwijaya Air’s CEO, Chandra Lie said in Embraer’s press release that the new aircrafts will be operated from its hub at JAKARTA’s Soekarno Hatta International Airport and other key centers at Balikpapan, Makassar, Surabaya and Medan. The jet claimed will give Sriwijaya Air the flexibility to operate city-pairs with distances up to 2,300 nautical miles (4,260 kilometers).

Sriwijaya Air is Embraer’s newest customer and joins ten other carriers in the Asia Pacific/China region that have selected E-Jets. Airlines in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Australia operate a total of 90 E-Jets. (bintang@theindonesiatoday.com)
