Toyota Car Sales, Increase in January, Honda's Declines

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today - Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) reported its car sales to retail market grew 10% to 29,010 units in January 2012, compared to January 2011, or increased 8.6% compared to December 2011, Bisnis Indonesia reported this morning.

Johnny Darmawan, TAM's president director, said TAM had successfully overcome the supply problem from Thailand after the wake of flood.

He said Toyota sedan sales jumped more than 120% to 744 units last month compared to December 2011. For hatchback segment, Johnny said, Toyota Yaris sales surged 288% to 1,196 units in January 2011, compared to December 2011.

For commercial segment, Toyota Hilux sales jumped 88% month-on-month to 410 units. While MPV segment, Avanza sales grew 3% to 14,641 units, medium MPV segment Toyota Kijang Innova booked sales of 6,436 units, rose 17% from December 2011. For SUV segment, Toyota Rush sales totaled 2,624 units in January 2012 and Fortuner sales reached 1,842 units.

Meanwhile, Honda car sales dropped 68.49% to 1,553 units last month, from 4,928 units in January 2011.

Jonfis Fandy, marketing director of PT Honda Prospect Motor, said the sales drop of Honda cars in January was mainly due to the supply problem from Thailand hit by natural disaster.

Honda only sold 2 units of its hatchback segment Jazz last month, recorded no sales for sedan segment (City, Civic and Accord) which completely built up in Thailand. While Honda CR-V (SUV segment) only recorded sales of 70 units, dropped 94.06% from 1,179 units in January 2011.

Only Honda Freed recorded 35.75% sales growth, totaling 1,481 units in January 2011, compared to 1,091 units in the same months of 2011. (hans@theindonesiatoday.com)
