Ridley to Help Reduce Indonesia's Reliance on Salt Import

Theindonesiatoday.com - Ridley Corporation Ltd says discussions with Indonesian government and feasibility studies have commenced for Ridley to establish a commercial scale salt field in the country with similar attributes to Australian salt fields.

According to Ridley’s press statement, the company claimed it will significantly reduce Indonesia’s reliance on large volumes of imported salt.

“Should this project proceed, it will fundamentally change the nature of Cheetam Salt’s business in Indonesia and provide an opportunity for significant long term growth in that region,” the company said.

PT Cheetam Salt Indonesia, Ridley’s Indonesian branch, is stated to be locally managed, has strong relationships with Indonesian businesses and government departments, and thereby provides a stable platform upon which to launch an expansion programme into Asia.

Cheetham Salt, subsidiary of ASX-listed Ridley Corporation Ltd, is one of major salt producer in Australia.

In Indonesia, the company has one refinery in Cilegon, West Java, which was completed in 2010. Cheetham also had in 2010 signed an MoU with Indonesian Government to explore the feasibility of constructing a modern saltfield in Indonesia.

According to Ridley’s presentation material, Indonesian salt production in the first half 2011 increased 36% to 45,000 tons. (bintang@theindonesiatoday.com)
