BI Green Banking

JAKARTA, Indonesia Today - Bank Indonesia plans to impose sanction to banks that providing loans to companies whose operations are evidently destroying the environment, Bisnis Indonesia reported this morning.

Irwan Lubis, director deputy for banking survey and regulation at Bank Indonesia, said the sanction is a point that is discussed on the draft of Bank Indonesia Regulation regarding green banking.

"This year, green banking regulation is targeted to be issued as we are now finalizing the regulation," he said.

The sanction considered would be, among other things, to increase the risk quality on the bank's risk weighted assets if they disbursed loans to companies disobedient over environmental management.

Bank Indonesia and Environment Ministry had in late December 2010 signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for green banking regulation.

Sakariza Qori Hemawan, group head of corporate sustainability at PT Bank Negara Indonesia Tbk (BBNI), said his party is now studying to give incentives by cutting interest to debtors that support environment. (hans@theindonesiatoday.com)
