State Enterprise Minister, Mustafa Abubakar, said the government has called off a plan to merge four State-owned insurance companies. The government will instead form a new sociial and health insurance firm.
The House of Representative (DPR) has earlier recommended the government to merge four insurance companies, namely, military sociail insurance PT Asuransi Sosial Angkatan Bersenjata (Asabri), civil servant PT Tabungan & Asuransi Pegawai Negeri (Taspen), workers social insurance PT Jaminan Sosial Tenaga Kerja (Jamsostek) and health insurance PT Asuransi Kesehatan Indonesia (Askes).
Mustafa was quoted by Bisnis Indonesia as saying that the decision was made based on coordinating meeting among related ministers, including Health Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare.
Mustafa said the government will report the decision to DPR in later date.
The head of Association of Indonesia's Insurance and Sociail Protection, Hotbonar Sinaga welcome the government's decision, arguing that the four companies have different characteristics and business focus.
